Why people will beat machines in recognising speech for a long time yet

The ability to communicate fluently in all languages is a phenomenal task. One of the reasons this feat is so difficult to realise is the huge variation in pronunciation within language themselves. For example, the English tongue has multiple intonations and inflections on vowels, often depending on the speaker’s accent, social class, or age. This same reason is why voice-recognition technology sometimes struggles to perceive strong or uncommon accents. Read more about it here.
